3" and 3.5" Hinge Applications
While 3x3" hinges are usually used for furniture and windows, they are sometimes also used for doors that are less than 1-3/8" in thickness, and less than 30" wide. The added beauty and strength of a luxurious ball bearing hinge is sure to make a difference.
- Door Thickness
3" and 3.5" hinges are designed for doors that measure up to 1-3/8" in thickness. For thicker doors, a 4-inch hinge (or larger) should be used.
- Door Width
3-inch hinges are designed for doors that measure up to 30" wide. 3.5" hinges are designed for doors that measure up to 32" wide.
4" and 4.5" Hinge Applications
The most popular door hinge size today is the 4x4 inch hinge - this is the standard size hinge that is found in most home interiors. 4.5-inch hinges are just a bit larger and offer extra support for heavier doors. - Door Thickness

Door Hinge Locations:
Most doors you see will have only 3 hinges, but taller doors can sometimes have 4. The U.S. standards commonly used in construction are as follows:
- The top hinge usually is installed 5-inches down from the top edge (jamb) of the door.
- The bottom hinge is installed 10 inches up from the bottom edge of the finished floor.
- The third hinge is centered between the top and bottom hinges.
Number of hinges per door:
As a general rule, you will want to use 1 hinge per every 30 inches of the door (or fraction thereof).
Door Height:
- Doors up to 60 inches need 2 hinges.
- Doors over 60 inches, but not over 90 inches, need to use 3 hinges.
- Doors over 90 inches but not over 120 inches, 4 hinges are recommended.
